As per the employer group belonging to resource industry, AMMA, the passage of fair work Amendment bill in Australian Parliament mean that important amendment to workplace relations laws would help in securing new resource industry projects and also help in bringing more jobs as well as investments in the nation.
Employers would now have a mechanism to progress new project agreements when bargaining with trade unions stalls while ensuring employees are not at a disadvantage, said Scott Barklambm, AMMA, executive director.
He also pointed out, as per the recent analysis of KPMG commissioned by AMMA, it has been found that the fair work act’s Greenfields agreement system has resulted in costs as well as delays to major projects in Australia in recent years.
Barklamb explained that the new bill would provide a safety valve, allowing fair work commission to approve employer’s proposed agreement if a deal cannot be reached.
Presently, such agreements do remain in limbo, or the employer is forced to concede to an exorbitant union that demands just to get the work underway.
The amendment must be the first step for overhauling the Fair work Act, inorder to support better the interest of employers as well as employees as well as wider Australian community.
He further added that, the loophole in bargaining system does permit the unions to take actions such as strike before genuine bargaining commenced and presently it has been closed, and this would be end to strike first and talk later which are bargaining tactics for few.
Barklamb said, the resource industry does welcome their progress as demonstration that the Senate is capable of meeting this challenge when it does engage with how work place relations laws actually operate in practice and see through deliberate misinformation and scare campaigns.
