On 9th July 2010, a spokesperson of Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) said that Constitution Day is the occasion that marks Australia’s creation as a nation, the day in 1900 when Queen Victoria gave royal assent to the Constitution. It is also a fitting time to welcome new citizens who will contribute to our future. He also added that Australians look to the past and future as part of Constitution Day festivities. The day will be celebrated with several ceremonies to welcome Australian visa holders as new citizens.
The ceremonies were staged in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and Canberra. In coming days, about 500 new Australians from about 70 countries will be welcomed at citizenship ceremonies across the nation. The department stated, “These special Constitution Day ceremonies will give our nation’s newest citizens an opportunity to acknowledge that they understand and respect what it means to become Australians.”
