The Reasons

The Australian Federal Cabinet is considering a proposal, to introduce compulsory settlement for new immigrants in far flung regional areas. The duration is likely to extend to five years, after they arrive in Australia. The aim is to ease the pressure on population, and tackling congestion of Sydney and Melbourne. The migrants, affected will be in skilled and family stream. The data of the Home Affairs Department reveals that, 87% of newly arriving migrants, currently settle in these two cities. Furthermore, there will be an order asking the new migrants to reside in regional areas, which struggle with less population.  The other option is other capital cities also.

The logic of this settlement plan is that such migrants will spend the time in an area, and will also opt for continuing to live there after establishing a connection with the community.

The opportunities

Presently, Australia has many visas, like

• 489 Skilled Regional Visa (Provisional),
• Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (187)
• Skilled Regional (Permanent) 887, which encourage immigrants to settle in regional areas.

Several states are also running their migration programs which give support to immigrants.  There is a condition that they need to reside/work, for twenty four months in those designated areas. Furthermore, the trend of the new migrants is to proceed to either Sydney/Melbourne on obtaining the permanent residency.

A person who holds subclass 190 Permanent Visa, and is not able to find any work, tells the authorities about the difficulties of survival. Subsequently, the sponsor state permits the visa holders, to move outside the state.  Additionally, the temporary visa holders, need to stay in regional areas, to meet the necessary conditions, prior to getting permanent residency.

Lack of job opportunities

Some migrants to these areas have to suffer because the employers give preference to local candidates in giving jobs. When they get the work after great struggle they have to spend hours each day in commuting, between homes, at a far place and working site. There is less time for the family matters. There is a lack of opportunities for new migrants.

Moreover, some present and past politicians are calling regarding a cut in Australian immigration intake. The Citizenship Minister Alan Tudge is taking measures and directing the new migrants to reside in rural/regional areas.

Some areas feel the pressure of population, and other regions demand more people. The problem is regarding distribution, and the government, needs to ensure, that the infrastructure, is in place before the demand, and not behind it.
