The United Kingdom introduced new salary threshold for Tier 2 visa category that makes migrant workers earn £35,000 annually. The previous annual income threshold was £20,000 less than the national average salary of the United Kingdom. Many industry bodies have opposed the move of the Government as the skilled immigration is the primary requirement for the industry.
Indians are the highest in taking more number of Tier 2 visas in the year 2015. The new income threshold may seriously affect the 40,000 Indians including South Asians who are in the UK working in teaching, nursing, software and various skilled industries. The migrant workers in the United Kingdom are working for the UK below national average salary, paying their taxes responsibly contributing the economy significantly.
The opposition Labor party MPs have termed the Governments move as discriminatory and gathered 100 000 signatures through online support. Despite the protests from the large section of people, there is no positive outcome from the country.
The United Kingdom’s manufacturing industry mostly relies on the migrant workers. The industry considered the move of the Government as unrealistic, and there would not be an exact replacement for the skills if migrant workers are not allowed to live in the country permanently.
The Migration Advisory Committee of United Kingdom in its report demanded Government contain skilled migrants. The Industry bodies have seriously termed those skilled migrants as resourceful and skillful necessary to the industry. Instead of containing the immigrants, it would be better for the Government to prioritize spending in equipping skills to the local citizens of the country.
