While speaking with the media, Australia's Immigration Minister, Dutton said, the refugees detained at the Australia’s illegal detention center at Manus, a small island on Papua New Guinea's (PNG) Manus Island have only two options, either to stay in PNG, or return to their home country.
He further added that “Our position, confirmed again today with PNG, is that no one from Manus Island Regional Processing Centre will ever be settled in Australia.” "There is no third-country option available for people out of Manus at this point in time. That's the reality that we deal with."
The statement from the immigration minister came after his meeting with the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Peter O’Neill regarding the closure of the illegal detention centre.
According to the stats, since the opening of the detention center, less than 20 people had decided to re-settle in PNG, whereas thousands of people returned to their native lands.
Anyone entering Australia by sea is considered as a refugee and is either sent back to where they come from or to PNG or Nauru for processing their claims of settling in Australia as a refugee. There are currently 1300 refugees detained by Australia.
