The Northern Territory government in Australia intends to invite 2500 more migrants, particularly from Asia, as there is a scarcity of trained and skilled workers in the territory. This proposal’s principal objective is to develop Northern Territory. The chief minister of the territory, Adam Giles, said that he was consulting with the authorities at the federal level, primarily the prime minister, Mr. Tony Abbott and federal minister for immigration, Mr. Scott Morrison regarding setting up and arranging a plan for a regional migration agreement.
He stated that bringing in workers from outside was not easy as it could face opposition from within the country. But it is also true that within in the Northern Territory, there is low migration but, at the same time local employers encounter and face challenges in recruiting from within the region as unemployment is low (1.3%) in the region.
He also stated that he is seeking to bring in the needed workers from Asia. He stated that this would be a positive thing to do in regards to (or, in terms of) investment, population, trade, etc. He disclosed that he is working on a trilateral treaty/agreement between the Northern Territory, East Timor and Indonesia. And also, the government would have to look into issues regarding such a treaty and what its ramifications would be for employees brought in and hired, housing and essential services.
He added that he is still in talks regarding the time period over which such a skilled migration of the workforce from NT’s northern neighbours would take place. He also laid importance on the need for such migration from the neigbouring countries to be welcomed by the Australian community as a whole.
