Ontario Planning To Launch A New Immigration Stream For Tech Workers

Ontario Province Says It's Hard to Find Tech Talent
The 2019 budget involves a planned modification to the Ontario Provincial Nominee Program that will build a dedicated stream to support Ontario's tech sector to attract highly qualified employees who would be chosen for Canada PR.
Many tech businesses need special talent to develop their business, which they can't consistently find here in the province of Ontario, a spokesperson for the Economic Development, Trade and Job Creation Minister stated in an email statement.
The province ordered a report from the Communications and Information Technology Council, which states Canada will be short approximately 220,000 proficient workers by the year 2021.
Benefits of the New Tech Stream
Statistics Canada Numbers on tech sector job openings provincially and locally paint a complicated picture, as per the Mikal Skuterud, an economics professor at the University of Waterloo.
As per the 2016 census, job openings in the leading tech sector are greater than the aggregate level of the province, which would encourage this type of government action, Skuterud told.
The job openings number hasn't meant vital wage increase over the same 03 year period, and that's challenging for labor economists to describe.
When the labor market is plenty of workers, proposed employees will fight for jobs by attempting to work for less.
This immigration program type would help encourage that kind of environment, Skuterud told.
Proceed with Attention
It's doubtful that a provincial program will bring the equivalent workers number as did the Canada federal program in the 1990s, but professor Skuterud told it's essential for the province to move with attention in grading the program too soon and to build conditions that will support new immigrants succeed.
Statistics Canada data reveals the rate of unemployment for high-level tech workers is lesser than the whole rate of unemployment in Ontario province. But other data reveals the job openings haven't appeared in wage growth, as per Mikal Skuterud, an economics professor at the University of Waterloo.
