It has been announced that the hugely popular Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSWP) is re-open. While it is still unclear exactly when the process will open the announcement has stated that 5000 applications will be accepted through the year to 31st March 2018. Also, the date for closure is yet to announced. The Quebec Skilled Worker Program run completely separately to the Express Entry System for the whole of Canada and is operated on a strict first come first served basis.
The QSWP gives both families and single applicants the opportunity to apply directly to Quebec for immigration rather than go through the Express entry System.
There have been some changes to the intake for the forthcoming years which should be noted. Firstly, the points based system has been changed so that the minimum number of points for a single applicants has been revised u up to 50 points from the previous 49. Secondly, for a married applicant the points have been raised to 59 up from 57. It should also be noted that those proficient in French may be awarded extra points although this is not a requirement for entry.
The points awarded for training has also been revised. The points stretch across five categories with more points to training that are in demand in the local, Quebec labour market. This may be different to the nationwide skill requirements. Top tier areas of training are now given 12 points when previously they were given 16 points.
The Mon projet Québec system which is used for the application process suffered some teething problems last year when introduced but the government have said that significant improvements have now been made to the system which should allow for easier applications.
Finally, there are categories that are not subject to the 5000 applicant cap including those that already have a job offer in Quebec so long as they still meet the entry requirements, and those that already a temporary resident in Quebec and meets the entry requirements.
