In India, the American consulate has registered unprecedented 60% jump in the number of students visas issued for this year. With most of the visas has been issued between October 1st, 2014 and September 30th, 2015, which is expected to translate into admissions in US varsities. The number of Indian students heading to America this year is much higher when compared to last year, 102673.
More than 50% of the Indian students who are going abroad for education are choosing the America’s 9000 institutions, and diversity of education do continue to be a big magnet for them. The rising number of visa approval, as well as admissions, is a testimony to the America’s popularity among the Indian students, said the Phillip Roskamp, the public affairs officer for US consulate in Mumbai.
Earlier only 54664 students were going to the US at the turn of the century; the numbers have hit a peak of about 104897 in the year 2009-2010 have dipped marginally for three consecutive years, before gaining 6% last year.
Besides domestic factors such as rising income levels of people belonging to India and having higher aspiration for the foreign education, one key relative development has led to increasing in American admission is fall in the number of UK admission.
A 50% drop has been seen in the previous years. Following the recent unfavorable changes in visa rules of the UK which prevent students from staying after completion of their studies, the American visa has been preferred.
Ryan Pereira, USIEF (US-India Educational Foundational) regional officer, As part of American Education System which is practical oriented, the students can stay in US for 12 months in order to work and get relevant training . It adds that students belonging to STEM (science, technology, engineering and Math) field can apply for extension of another 17 months that does allow them to stick on and work for about 29 months In total.
Even though 60% of the students are visiting the US for post graduation studies, the rising affluence of the Indians are reflected in growing number of admission for undergraduate and non-Stem courses. We are also witnessing a clear trend among the students belonging to India who desire to be part of the global classrooms of America in order to get good education and return to tap the best opportunities back home in our nation, said executive director of USIEF, Adam J Grotsky.
Nearing to universities and colleges belonging to America would be part of the Study in the USA, a fair that has been organized by the USIEF on October in Mumbai. Entry to the event would be held in Juhu at JW Marriott from 12 pm to 5 pm, will be free. At the fair, both students and parents would have opportunity to meet the US, university representatives and consular officers to learn more about the university selection process, how to apply for the student visa for the US, exams admissions related.
