Australia’s resurgent international education industry has hit a speed bump as immigration officials have put up the shutter against the students from the sub-continent.
The student visa grants declined at the end of the previous financial year, making perhaps the first setback in the sector’s comeback from its 2009 crash.
The immigration dept data reveals that there were almost 375000 international student visa holders in Australia at the end of June, it is the highest figure since the tail end of the previous decade’s enrollment boom. We find monthly student visa applications have climbed past 35,000 for the first time in 4 years, buoyed by growing interest from the key markets.
But we find the visa grants fell in the June quarter, reflecting the crackdown on the students from nations such as India, Vietnam and Nepal. The number of visas handed out to the students from these nation fell previous year by 13%, 18 % and 16 % respectively.
The International Education Association of Australia have said five years of cumulative growth has been heartening for the sector.
However the immigration dept has acted on varied concerns around genuine student applications over the past few months, executive director Phil Honey wood added. Officials were imposing stronger discipline in the application of genuine temporary entrant test that gauges students’ academic as well as the financial capacity to live as well as study in Australia.
Notwithstanding these interventions we still see the robust growth out of China and other strong markets such as Brazil, Taiwan and Colombia, Mr Honey wood stated.
Visa grants have recorded around 9% rise for students belonging to China and about 8% for students belonging to Brazil, which leapfrogged Vietnam to become Australia’s fourth top market.
Mr Honey wood sounded a note of caution over Australia’s reliance on China which has attracted more than 65000 visa grants in the year 2014-2015. We are still focused on two or three key market our curriculum is in danger of becoming stale.
Visa grants to school students also risen about 29% in June quarter. It suggested the sector would be an important pipeline. But the enrollment from Brazil might dwindle thanks to the next year’s freezing of its science without borders program while Indian students are looking to the US following Barack Obama ‘s bid to introduce six-year post study work visa for science and technology graduates.
