Rolls-Royce, which currently employs 300 staff at its campus at Seletar Aerospace Park, is looking to hire another 500 employees - 90 per cent of whom will be Singaporeans and permanent residents.
Speaking at a briefing on Monday, Rolls-Royce human resource country manager Ang Cham Lark said the world's second largest manufacturer of aircraft engines took a "conscious decision to stay local". It is looking to hire technicians, quality inspectors and production team leads.
While the global economy is in a precarious position - with the outlook uncertain for the aviation industry – Ms. Ang assured that Rolls-Royce's hiring will proceed as planned regardless of any potential downturn next year.
"This is a new and exciting industry here so there is a high level of interest so we have had no problems with recruitment," said Ms. Ang.
In 2009, it was announced that Rolls-Royce will open a factory here, with total investments exceeding S$700 million. Production at the plant will start in the middle of next year.
Manufacturing services manager Tan Puay Hua, 41, who works on the 1.65 million sq feet campus, hopes that more women will join her in taking up jobs in the industry. Ms Tan said: "This is a male-dominated industry and it would be great to have more women here as you do not need to be macho or strong to do the work."
Staff is currently sent to the United Kingdom for training. But by next year, the training will be conducted here at Rolls-Royce's Seletar campus.
Mr. Ravinder Singh, 42, who joined Rolls-Royce in January, had to undergo a six-month training course in the UK. "My wife was sad that I would be away but at the same time she was supportive as she knew this was a good opportunity for me," said Mr. Singh.
Manufacturing engineer Derek Teo, 32, was also attracted to the chance of working for Rolls-Royce. He said: "It is a brand name and the technology is much better."
