South African officials have assured India that under the terms of the Preferential Trade Agreement, small and marginal mineral producers will be encouraged to export precious metals such as gold and platinum as well as diamonds directly to importers.
India has been pressing South Africa for duty cuts on certain products such as boneless buffalo meat by two—thirds on the ground that the meat conforms to international standards. India has pointed out to South Africa that the other members of South African Customs Union, including Swaziland, Namibia, Lesotho and Botswana had already agreed to the proposal.
South Africa and India have decided to further discuss the proposals before the next meeting of BRICS to prepare terms for the next meet of the World Trade Organization.
