More global students are willing to study in Canadian universities in the Atlantic region, as per the new report.
The global cohort has managed a 20% increase in full-time student registration in the region, which comprises the provinces of Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick.
Atlantic Canada presently has a sum of higher than 19,000 full-time foreign students, as per the figures published by the Association of Atlantic Universities on 15 October.
Cape Breton University in the province of Nova Scotia has witnessed the biggest increase, from 1,982 to 3,436 global students. Meantime, Dalhousie University in the province of Nova Scotia has the biggest global student population in the region, at 4,417.
Memorial University in the province of Newfoundland attached 441 foreign students for an entire population of 3,402, while Mount Allison University in New Brunswick saw an approximately 40% spike in its numbers, to 255 foreign students.
The Association also stated that 94% of global students told that they felt welcome to Atlantic Canada, with 77% saying that they would like to work and live in the region following graduation.
These replies are of selective importance provided to the demographic difficulties facing the region. Atlantic Canada is at the sharp end of Canada’s fight with aging populations and contracting labor markets.
The 4 provinces in the region have special challenges in attracting and holding new immigrants. The Canadian government, in association with the four provinces, started the Atlantic Immigration Pilot to support and tackle the demographic problem.
The A.I.P includes 3 immigration streams, along with one aimed particularly at international graduates.
1. Atlantic High-Skilled Program
This Program is intended for skilled workers with professional, management, or technical/skilled job experience. There are also additional requirements. The employment offer must last for a minimum of one year.
2. Atlantic Intermediate-Skilled Program
This program is intended for candidates for jobs needing a high school education and/or training which are job-specific. There are also other specifications. The employment offer needs to be permanent.
3. Atlantic International Graduate Program
This program is intended for applicants who have a degree or diploma from a publicly-funded university in an Atlantic Canadian province. Work experience is not needed. The employment offer must last for a minimum of one year.
