India has left its footmark in BPO sector, the next rising country in call center arena is South Africa. The government of South Africa is taking major steps to boost the call center business in the country.
Internationally renowned companies Amazon and Aegis have already started their operations from South African call centers. British company Coracall also opened its call center in South Africa recently.
"The main reason for coming to South Africa was the pool of talent, with regards to the employees we could bring in," says Philip Lightfoot, CEO of Coracall
Coracall with current strength of 300 employees targets to expand in next 3 years. Most of its employees are from Durban's large Indian community. They are in Customer Support and are the main calling staff for the company.
South African government expects more BPO companies to come and start their business in the country. It has also launched many financial benefits to achieve this.
"It has had a massive impact," says Suleman Shaikh. He runs a call center in Johannesburg that deals specifically with the South African consumer market.
He adds: "It has made the industry much more competitive in terms of attracting offshore investment into the country.
"We can now compete with other offshore locations, such as India and the Philippines, much more favorably. It has lowered the barriers of entry into the market and it really has given the industry that competitive edge we have been looking for."
Call center industry has increased by 85% from 2007 to 2010. The sector has currently 10,000 people, but it is expected to reach 50,000 by 2015.
