As per a study published on Friday, the working age in Germany is expected to fall around a third by 2050:,if Europe’s biggest economy does not involve itself in increasing immigration from countries outside the European Union.
The study also states that, Germany would require around 276,000 to 491,000 net immigrants from non-EU countries.
It also predicted that working age population would drop below 29 million from 45 million today if immigration does not pick up. The study considered, raising retirement age to seventy and increasing the number of women workforce, but still it only adds upto 4.4 million to the number of employed.
As per the latest statistics, the number of foreigners living in Germany grew by 6.8% i.e. 519340, in 2014 when compared to previous year. Most of them include Syrians fleeing from war and Bulgarians and Romanians seeking for work.
Around 60% of the new immigrants were from European Union member states. By the end of 2014, the total numbers of foreigners registered were 8.2 million
The study’s author expects the pool of qualified workers to dwindle as the whole of Europe is grappling with shrinking birth rates and aging population. As a result, Germany must focus on attracting talent from non European countries.
The ring wing parties: including AfD, new alternative for Germany, PEGIDA (Patrotic Europeans Against the islamisation of the West), a grassroot movement which held larger rallies during the end of the year in eastern city of Dresden have increased support due to rise in concerns about immigration.
