Canadian provinces British Columbia & Newfoundland observed employment gains in the month of October, Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey reveals.
Canada attached 443,000 latest jobs in the span of 12 months from Oct 2018 to Oct 2019, driven by increases in full-time work, said by Statistics Canada.
Overall employment fell slightly in Oct 2019, as Canada dropped 1,800 net jobs, but the national rate of unemployment held constant at 5.5%, the survey reveals.
The slight decline in net jobs in Oct 2019 followed by large employment increases in Aug & Sept 2019.
Canadian province British Columbia is with a gain of 15,000 net positions in October 2019. Statistics Canada told this was driven by gains in full-time work for individuals aged 55 and above. The province’s rate of unemployment remained constant at 4.7% which is the lowest in Canada.
Newfoundland & Labrador province also posted a gain of 2,700 net positions in October 2019, a result principally of part-time work among those within the core working ages of 24 years to 54 years.
Both the level of employment and the rate of unemployment continued largely stable in most of the Canadian provinces in October.
The number of individuals employed in construction and manufacturing fell in October 2019, by 21,000 and 23,000, respectively. Most manufacturing losses occurred in Ontario while the drop in construction was spread over 5 provinces led by Ontario & Quebec.
Employment in the public administration was grown by 20,000 in October 2019, with increases reported in Quebec, British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. Employment in this sector increased by 73,000 over Oct 2018, or 7.6%.
Employment was also grown in October for individuals working in the insurance, finance, rental and leasing, and real estate industry. Statistics Canada told the gain of 18,000 net positions in this area was the second rise in three months. Related to October 2018, employment was increased by 64,000.
