According to figures published by recruitment firm CWJobs, in the past 4 years, the number of tech jobs up for grabs in southern England and inner London has almost doubled.
Contributing to a 5-year national high, the Second quarter figures for inner London vacancies have increased to 9,886 from 5,736since 2009 while southern England has grown to 27,421 from 15,944, and outer London to 23,365 from 14,899.
Unsurprisingly, East London's Silicon Roundabout has been key in boosting tech job availability in inner London, whilst Croydon Tech City has helped outer London, and the south by Cambridge's ‘Silicon Fen’ area with Bristol's development of a computer gaming hub.
Nationally, permanent vacancies were up 0.7% and contract positions up 1.3% in the last year, for the most part due to the south's contribution. Scotland had experienced a decline since 2009, in the last year, however, tech job availability has recovered, growing by 7.9% since 2012.
CWJobs’ website director, Richard Nott said that as investment in technology firms increases, there is less need for professionals to be based in the capital city, giving professionals the opportunity to work across many different regions.
He said that this is good news for the prospects of IT professionals and for the industry across the UK who may no longer need to consider re-locating to get the best jobs. As IT's position as an inherently 'networked industry' grows, it's likely that this trend will continue.
