The Number Of New Citizens To Canada In March 2014 Was Nearly Twice Compared To Last Year

Almost 33,700 people from across 199 countries became citizens of Canada in March 2014 at the citizenship ceremonies that were held across the nation. This number is more or less double as compared to one year ago; 17,089 people became citizens of Canada in March 2013.

Canada welcomed new citizens at the 312 citizenship ceremonies throughout the country, from different places such as college campuses to Canada’s citizenship and immigration offices, and also special ceremonies that were held at designated heritages sites and railway stations.

The increase in numbers may be attributed to improvements and changes that were put in effect over the past year and helped to decrease backlogs and made the system well-organized and at the same time helped more number of people in realizing their dream of becoming Canadian citizens. There are proposed measures to the Bill C-24, Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act, which will further reduce the processing and long waiting times by streamlining the entire process. It is anticipated that these measures will bring down the average processing time to one year and will also reduce the present backlog to 80% by 2015-2016.

Till March 2014, Canada has accepted over 75,900 new citizens at 759 citizenship ceremonies that were held across Canada and compared to one year ago, Canada has accepted 35,320 new citizens.

A total of 128,936 people were granted citizenship in the year 2013 – an average of 10,745 every month.

Since 2006, Canada has welcomed the highest number of citizens with an average of 257,000 newcomers every year. There was also an increase of 30% demand for Canadian citizenship.
