From May 10th 2016, new guidelines for students under F-1 visa are now allowed to work for three years who are enrolled in the accredited educational institutions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
The Final Rule has been Released by the Department of Homeland Security.
"This is welcome news and will benefit our Indian students as majority of our students going to US prefer STEM programs. Also, by giving authority to only creditworthy universities, they will be able to manage the growth of unscrupulous agents who send the students to fake universities just to make easy money. It's a welcome step, which will not only boost education but also check immoral elements in the field of education", says Punita Vadhera, educational consultant.
Students of STEM who avail themselves an extension of 17 months under OPT are eligible to file for the extension on their OPT by further seven months. For those who are not in STEM track of study, the OPT for them will remain same at 12 months.
