This summer Austria experienced a marked increase in tourism. Between May and September the number of overnight stays increased by 2.7 per cent. Only Burgenland and Lower Austria recorded a decline in overnight bookings.
Lower Austria recorded 3.5 million overnight stays this summer which is down 1.9 per cent on last year’s figure.
But according to the Office of Tourism, overall a record number of overnight stays was reached last year.
The Office also stated that the recent figures are a preliminary indication of Austrian tourism during the summer months and that not all states have presented their final figures. Until all regions have done so, no figures are fixed.
Between January and October 4.6 million people spent the night in hotels and B&B’s, which is a growth of 0.4 per cent. Four and five star hotels have become the clear winners in this, experiencing the greatest increase in booking figures with 60,000 additional overnight stays.
But the positive developments on the tourism market are not a purely Austrian phenomena, but a regional one with the neighbouring countries of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary also developing positively.
