‘Brexit’ Secretary David Davis stated that UK would introduce a more stringent immigration system than Australia’s point based immigration system.
Speaking for the first time in the House of Commons since his selection at Cabinet, he said, the UK Government is looking to gain control over borders to fulfill the promises delivered during the ‘Brexit’ referendum. However, the United Kingdom Prime Minister, Theresa May has ruled out an Australian model of the immigration system.
Referring to the statement made by the Prime Minister, he said: “What the Prime Minister said in China is very clear: she wants a results based immigration system, one that actually delivers an outcome that the British people vote for.”
He further added: “She was concerned that a points-based system was actually too open ended, that it did not actually put a control on the number of people coming to the UK and therefore she wanted something which sounded like it would more rigorous, not less.”
Fellow Brexit campaigner Bernard Jenkin told a UK daily that it is “wrong” to suggest that the PM is “backsliding”. He also said: “We are going to get back control of our immigration system. Whatever immigration system the government chooses to have it’s under our control.”
