US Government to Suspend Immigration and Canada Continues to Open

US President Donald Trump has declared that he will sign an Executive Order to suspend US immigration temporarily as early as Wednesday, 22 April 2020 citing coronavirus anxieties. The US president initially made the announcement through Twitter on 20th April night.

On 21st April evening, during his regular coronavirus directions at the White House, President Trump announced that his administration was presently working on drafting the Executive Order, and it could be available for his signature by Wednesday, 22 April 2020.

During his Tuesday evening announcement, Trump told the temporary suspension is fixed to last 60 days for PR visas (or “green cards”), though there will be few exceptions, which he did not mention.

The president also attached that the suspension of US immigration was not simply a means to contain the COVID-19  spread, but also to support American workers who have been damaged by the economic results of the coronavirus pandemic.

Canada Continues to Open to Immigration In Spite of Coronavirus

Canada is also struggling with COVID-19 and has established emergency measures that include travel limitations on some international citizens.

Nonetheless, it continues committed to accommodating newcomers, temporary immigrant workers, and global students as much as feasible. It has not suspended immigration, but rather, proceeds to invite international citizens to provide their applications to arrive in Canada.

Understanding that foreign citizens may have trouble getting all required documentation now due to coronavirus-related breaks, Canada has said it will not refuse any application that is incomplete because of such delays.

In addition, Canada remains to hold both federal and provincial draws of immigration to invite new people to apply for Canada PR status.

Since the travel limitations were first declared by Canada on 16 March 2020 the following draws of immigration have taken place:

  • The Canadian government conducted Express Entry draws on 16 April and 15 April
  • The British Columbia (BC) province conducted a Provincial draw on 16 April
  • Two Federal Express Entry draws held on April 9
  • BC conducted 3 PNP draws on 6 April and 7 April, and 30 March
  • Saskatchewan conducted a PNP draw on 26 March
  • Manitoba also conducted a PNP draw on 26 March
  • A Federal Express Entry draw held on 23 March
  • Alberta also conducted a PNP draw on 18 March
  • A Federal Express Entry draw held on 18 March
