Indian nationals have obtained between 67 to 72% of the entire H-1B visas announced by the US in the previous five years, and the External Affairs Ministry told July 17.
The US H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that permits US firms to employ international workers in specialty professions that need technical or theoretical expertise.
Responding to a question in Lok Sabha, S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister told no comprehensive reforms have been made to the US H-1B visa program so far.
The government of India has closely discussed with all stakeholders and associated with the administration of US and the Congress on problems related to the movement of professionals from India, including those about the US H-1B program, he told.
Most recently, problems of US H-1B visa were raised while the visit of the Michael R Pompeo, US Secretary of State, to India on 26 June 2019. In our meetings, we have emphasized that this has been a mutually-beneficial association which should be nourished, he added.
He delivered out statistics according to that Indian citizens have obtained between 67 and 72% of the entire H-1B visas announced by the US in the last five years.
As per the data, 125,528 Indian nationals were announced H1-B visas in the year 2018 while 129,097 Indian citizens were announced H1-B visas in the year 2017. In the year 2016, 126,692 Indian citizens were given H1-B visa while in the year 2015, as many as 119,952 Indian citizens were given H1-B visa.
US H-1B visa has performed an essential role in promoting the movement of skilled Indian professionals. The Government of US has adopted specific administrative measures concerning to the H-1B visa program that has offered higher scrutiny of H-1B appeals and increased documentation demands, he said.
