The most famous US lawmakers- Congresswoman Grace Meng and Congressman Tom Emmer have proposed legislation that urges the state department to fast-track the visa approval procedure for foreign physicians who are set to work in the American hospitals.
The existing procedures would obviously lead to longer delays to obtain J-1 visas from US embassies in their nations, especially in India.
Reportedly, in the majority of the cases, the delays have made hospitals withdraw offers from international physicians who were accepted. The lengthy delays in visa approval procedure for foreign physicians led to unwanted confusion for doctors and the US hospitals that are depending on them.
Meng added that the inefficient approval process must be enhanced so that the doctors can enter the country as planned and offer the comprehensive medical care that is required in most communities across the country.
Emmer added that since US hospitals experience a shortfall of doctors, the legislation would enhance the healthcare access throughout the country by evading the continuing backlog of J-1 visas.
Known as the Grant Residency for Additional Doctors (GRAD) Act of 2015, Emmer and Meng’s bill would urge the state secretary to designate a State Department officer or employee to enhance the accelerated review of the applicants of J-1 visa who are set to move to the US for graduate medical education or training.
The strategy would require that the accelerated review should be taken care by the officer or employee from June to March, given that the majority of residency programs start from July.
Additionally, the legislation would authorize that Foreign Service officers at respective embassies will obtain training related to medical graduates and programs.
