Permanent Residents in Canada

The pathway to become a Permanent Resident in Canada can be short or long depending on the situation. It is achievable directly from overseas or by remaining inside Canada through applying to multiple immigration programs. Many persons achieving permanent residence initially come to Canada in the capacity of temporary residents holding a Study Permit or a Work Permit. The experience as temporary residents counts in the application for permanent residence.

The Canadian immigration programs leading towards permanent residents have three categories:

Family Class, Economic Class, and finally the Business Class

You can decide the first step to take Depending on your qualifications for the class you can succeed in. Each class has several immigration programs to bring candidates who can integrate quickly.

Qualifying for Economic Immigration

Canada welcomes more Economic Class immigrants in comparison to other category and has a plan for the next three years. For 2019 there is a target of 191,600, which increases to 202,300 in 2021.

Details of Express Entry

The Federal economic immigration works by using the system of Express Entry. Its economic immigration programs are:

  • Canada Experience Class
  • Federal Skilled Trades
  • Federal Skilled Worker

Additionally, it includes candidates for a few provincial programs.

Process in the Express Entry

  • Candidates can enter the pool of Express Entry by submitting a profile that is self-assessed. These profiles get a score by using the Comprehensive Ranking System
  • The top scoring profiles get the invitation to apply in Express Entry draws, held usually once every two weeks.
  • Candidates receiving the ITA have to submit full application in 60 days strictly
  • The processing time is generally six months for most of the candidates.

Scenario when the candidates Do Not Qualify for Express Entry

Such Candidates can consider applying in the provincial immigration programs.

The provinces manage programs and target many specified shortages in the labor market.

These cater to technology employees in Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec, long-haul truck drivers (Saskatchewan) and medical doctors in Atlantic Provinces.

The majority of provincial programs need a job offer for qualifying though some provinces manage a targeted list of occupations that have demand. These draws open and close, within a day itself.

Also the persons failing to qualify for provincial programs can try to go through work permit route and reach Canada temporarily through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program or its Study Permit stream. There is a possible transition to permanent residence.

Qualifying for the Family Class

Canada firmly believes in Family reunification and its federal government has a plan to welcome 88,500 family immigrants in 2018, which will reach 91,000 in 2021.
