In 2011, the Canadian wireless sector generated an overall benefit of $50.2 billion.
Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association announced this dramatic raise on Monday. The 16.7% increase from $43 billion in 2010 is due to the countries’ transition to smartphones, tablets and mobile data services. Applications profits are also increasing rapidly.
“With more than 90% of Canadians aged 15 and over now using a wireless device, we are connected like never before,” said Bernard Lord, CWTA President & CEO. “Not only has wireless become essential to the lives of Canadians, it has also become a critical component of our economic prosperity.”
Canada’s wireless industry supported 280,000 jobs during 2011 and with an inclusion of induced impact reaching 308,000 employees. Highly skilled wireless communication specialists are in high demand. Post-secondary institutions are developing programs geared specifically for the wireless industry.
“The wireless sector continues to yield significant economic benefits on both the supply-side and the demand-side,” said Stuart Jack, a Nordicity Partner. “The supply-side impacts include the GDP and employment attributable to economic activity within the wireless sector. The demand-side impacts include the consumer surplus generated by the competitive pricing and innovative services available to Canadians.”
CWTA conducts an annual report on the benefits of the wireless telecommunications industry. The facts and figures are available on their website.
Wireless carriers now offer coverage to more than 99% of Canadians. With half the country using wireless connections and 75% of households with access to wireless phones, the sector has yet to reach its peak. As the largest revenue coming from telecommunications, the wireless market prepares itself for another year of steady growth.
