Canada Immigration: Plans To Welcome 1 Million New Immigrants In 2020-22

Marco Mendicino, Minister of Refugees, Immigration, and Citizenship set out his vision for the Canadian immigration system on 28 Feb in Toronto.

It was his initial principal policy speech since his Nov 2019 appointment as Minister of Refugees, Immigration, and Citizenship. Mendicino was selected following the Liberal Party was re-elected to a second mandate in Oct 2019 and he is presently pursuing a plan of immigration set out in his mandate letter.

Highlights of Canadian Immigration Minister Speech

Mendicino began his speech by saying that the Canadian future depends on immigration. As such, it is important to have a dialogue on how many individuals Canada requires to secure its prosperity of the economy.

Mendicino told this dialogue and is necessary due to Canadian demographic facts. As an aging nation with a less birth rate, Canadians are living great and not having sufficient children to manage their population size.

It places higher pressure on the Canadian economy and financial standing. It is due to some workers depending upon fundraising government expenses, such as health care that will become more costly to deliver as the part of elderly Canadians proceeds to rise.

Mendicino announced a significant part of the solution is to welcome newcomers. Today, some 80% of the Canadian population increase will come from immigration, and estimates recommend that this will reach 100% by the 2030s.
